High Water Bill

A higher than average water bill could be your very first sign of a problem. If you haven’t changed any of your water habits, the extra water might be leaking from a pipe somewhere inside your home. Eventually you will probably find the problem, but by then it might be too late to do anything about it.

Signs Of Water Damage

Look around for signs of water damage. Water spots on your drywall are a big one. They don’t have to be discolored spots, although they can be. They can also just appear as wet spots out of nowhere. Water spots usually mean that there is a problem lurking behind your walls that needs to be addressed immediately.

Mold

If you see any signs of mold, there has to be moisture nearby. Mold doesn’t grow in perfectly dry conditions, so if you see it on your ceiling or your walls, there is moisture lurking somewhere that it shouldn’t be lurking. You are going to have to remove the mold spot anyway, so sometimes it is easy enough to cut out the piece of drywall and take a look behind it for any signs of leaks. Just be sure you don’t slice into any electrical wires or anything else that might be important.

Shut Off Your Water

If you suspect a leak, you should shut off the water supply to your house. If you know it is in a certain area, you can just shut off the water to that area. If you don’t have any clue, it might be best to shut off the water supply to the whole house and call someone to come over and take a look immediately. Water damage can happen fast, and cause a lot of damage to your home, so it is really better to be safe.
