Which Cabinet Is Right For You?

Kitchen Cabinets: Which Is Right For You?

There’s no way around it: If you’re thinking about a kitchen remodel project and kitchen cabinets are part of the plan, they’re going to be the most expensive part of your budget. When you’re first going over your budgetary options, you have three different types to choose from.

From least to most expensive, your options are:

Stock Cabinets

At the lower end are stock or “ready-to-assemble” (RTA) cabinets, sometimes even already pre-assembled. As you can guess from the name, these cabinets are standardized to a specific size and configuration and then mass-produced, which results in lower prices. Depending on the size and materials, the stock cabinets average between $80 and $400 per linear foot.

Semi-Custom Cabinets

For people who are ready to move past lower budget/entry-level options, semi-custom cabinets are the next step up. As the name suggests, even though sizes are still standardized, this allows for different configurations, letting owners customize their cabinet arrangement to a small degree. There tend also to be more choices and higher-quality materials.

The cost of semi-custom cabinets averages between $150 and $900 per linear foot, and there are no pre-assembled options; these must be built on-site.

Custom Cabinet

Unsurprisingly, the most expensive option is the custom cabinet. Here, the cabinets are made to measure exactly the size of the kitchen and the dimensions you prefer. You also choose the materials yourself, although obviously, a custom cabinet must be built from the ground up specifically for an owner’s need.

Custom cabinets can cost between $500 and $1400 per linear foot, depending on the material selection and design. This is obviously the premium choice and is really only an option for people willing to devote a huge chunk of a kitchen remodel’s total budget to their cabinetry.
