Shower Doors Or Curtains?

Shower Doors Or Curtains?

When designing a bathroom, there are a few things that make an impact on the overall feel and design. The type of shower enclosure that you choose is one of them. The two most used options are shower curtains or shower doors. We are going to take a look at each option and the pros and cons to consider.

Cleaning

One of the first things to consider is cleaning. Shower curtains are less work in this area because you can just take them down and throw them in the wash. No scrubbing required. Shower doors, if not scrubbed on a regular basis, will start to build up a film or soap scum and need to be cleaned more frequently. However, they do not stain like the fabric of a shower curtain might, and they will last alot longer than a shower curtain ever will. A shower curtain can also be closed when guests arrive to conceal the mess of bottles and towels you may be hiding in your shower. Guests can always see right through your glass shower doors.

The Look

Both shower curtains and shower doors can give your bathroom an upscale look. Glass doors can provide a clear line of sight to custom tile work in your shower, while a shower curtain can add color and graphic design to your bathroom, depending on what you choose. This is mostly a matter of your preference. Talk with your bathroom contractor or designer to see if they have any recommendations that will work with the design that you are planning. Shower curtains and doors can both look modern, or be designed to fit your decor options. There are lots of design choices with both options.

Chemicals and Mold

For many years, shower curtains were made out of PVC. PVC can emit gasses into the air that are a known carcinogen. While most companies have stopped stocking PVC shower curtains in more recent years, it is always advised that you check the labels on the curtain that you purchase. Another good option is to go for a fabric shower curtain instead. Hemp fabrics are known to be resistant to mold and mildew. Glass doors do not emit dangerous chemicals, but they can be a breeding ground for mold and mildew. Mold can grow in the caulk used to seal up the doors if not cleaned properly. Sometimes it gives the shower a dirty look, while other times it can’t even be seen, and is actually growing beneath the surface. Proper care and cleaning can take care of this problem from the start.
