Signs That Point To Water Heater Failure

Signs That Point To Water Heater Failure

People need hot water to cook, clean, and bathe. A typical water heater has a tank that holds the essential liquid and a thermostat that warms it to a specific temperature. These devices are usually kept in inconspicuous locations like attics, basements, or garages. They remain out of sight and out of mind, that is until something goes wrong. Eventually, anything and everything human-made will fail, so be on the lookout for these warnings.

1. Standing Water In The Pan

If homeowners can physically see liquid in the pan, different types of things could be going wrong. Regardless of what they are, the issue needs to be fixed promptly to prevent damages from happening. For instance, the pan usually only keeps so much water contained. After the H20 gets too high, it will overflow. This act can lead to drywall falling down from the ceiling below or becoming ruined on walls. If the matter is left unchecked for a period, it is possible for mold to grow. The leak may be from a pinhole in the tank, loose connections, a faulty pressure relief valve, or many other culprits.

2. Visible Leakage Through Outside Drains

Both the pressure relief and pan drain lines are supposed to discharge outside the home. If water can be seen flowing from these lines, a problem exists. However, these issues do not always necessarily mean you need a water heater replacement. The problem may be from a repairable part, so contact a plumber to remedy the dilemma.

3. Rumbling Sounds

Water heaters accumulate sediment in the tank as they age. Many new models come with self-cleaning mechanisms to prevent this build up, but unfortunately, sometimes, the event still occurs and a rumbling, popping noise can be heard coming from the unit. When the thermostat kicks on, the burner assembly attempts to warm the water, but at the same time, it also heats the debris, which creates the sounds. The act is not usually dangerous, but continually hearing the notes leaves homeowners wanting to pull out their hair.
