Summer Plumbing Tips

Summer Plumbing Tips

With summer right around the corner, there are some important plumbing issues to consider. You may have kids who are home from school or getting ready to hit the road for a summer vacation. Here are a few summer plumbing tips to keep your pipes flowing properly all season long.

More Washing

Summer fun usually has to do with getting dirty. Sand, mud and sunscreen usually leads to more laundry. Be sure that your washing machine is up to the task. Check all your hoses for leaks or cracks to spot a problem before it happens. Have a professional come in to inspect your machine and make sure it is working properly before the washing season starts. This can avoid some hefty repair bills later. Washing machine hoses should be replaced about every three years, so if you can’t remember the last time yours were replaced, now might be the time.

Clear Drains

With more washing of clothes, there will probably also be more showers happening. Keep your drains free of any clogs and debris. Pour a kettle of boiling water down your shower drain to remove any buildup. If your drains back up, you could have a messy water situation on your hands, and water coming through your ceiling. Avoid this with a little bit of prevention before there is a problem.

Garbage Disposal

With all the summer cook outs, you’ll want to be sure you are keeping your garbage disposal in good health. Don’t put any corn husks or other stringy vegetables in the disposal. It can clog it up and make for hard to fix problems. Also be sure not to put any fatty meats or grease down the disposal. These can clog it up and cause a huge back up in your drains.

Turn Down Your Water Heater

If you are leaving on vacation this summer, turn down your hot water heater. This will save you energy costs while you are gone since no one will be using the hot water. Just be sure to remember to turn it back up when you get home.

Schedule An Annual Maintenance

Schedule a check up for you home. Call in a plumbing professional to check out your plumbing annually. This will keep things flowing smoothly and keep you from being stuck with a costly repair bill. If your plumbing seems to be clogging up a lot, you may have a bigger problem. Consider a remodel to fix your issues.
